Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:32 p.m. ET

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo promoted Marty English to defensive coordinator on Friday.

English takes over for Tyson Summers, who left to become head coach at Georgia Southern.

A Colorado native, English was the linebackers coach for the Rams in Bobo's first season with Colorado State. English also served as co-defensive coordinator at Colorado State from 2012-14.

English was in charge of the defense in a 28-23 loss to Nevada at the Arizona Bowl last month.

Bobo said he had ''lots of very qualified people interested in this job, but we had a very qualified person on this staff who has been a coordinator in this league.''

Before arriving at Colorado State, English coached at Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
