Contract details of Florida coaches, including McElwain's buyout, released
The Florida Gators were willing to dish out big bucks to assemble their current coaching staff, just how much money the coaches will make was not public knowledge until details surfaced Wednesday. Not surprisingly, the figures the SEC school is able to pay are impressive.
According to AL.com, Jim McElwain is scheduled to make $3.5 million per season through 2020, plus bonuses. Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier will make $400,000 each of the next three seasons, defensive coordinator Geoff Collins will make $590,000 each of the next three seasons and defensive line coach Chris Rumph will earn $405,000 for the next two seasons.
The report also gathered details on McElwain's buyout, should the head coach be fired before the end of his deal. If that happens, Florida would owe McElwain $2.25 million per season until the deal expired, a hefty price tag considering the school is currently paying Will Muschamp $6.3 million to coach at Auburn and recruit against the Gators.
The Gators have protected themselves in the event that McElwain leaves for another job with a $3.5 million buyout of their own if the coach left before February 2016 and a figure of $1.5 million if he leaves before 2020.
For better or worse, it appears the Gators and McElwain are tied to one another for the foreseeable future. If the team has initial success and the offense improves, fans will be thrilled to pay his fee. If not, well, if Chip Kelly fails in Philadelphia don't be surprised if his agent calls Gainesville to gauge the school's interest in the event of his return to the college game.
