Cops: Former Texas A&M LB, wife murdered by son

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:50 p.m. ET

Shocking new details have emerged in the killing of former Texas A&M linebacker Antonio Armstrong and his wife Dawn, as their 16-year-old son has been arrested and charged with their murders.

The Armstrongs were found shot in their Houston home in the early hours of Friday morning; Dawn died at the scene and Antonio was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The 911 call came from the 16-year-old son, ABC13 reports; a gun was found in the home next to a note that read "I've been watching you."

Family and friends were stunned, describing the Armstrongs as a model family. The couple also had a 20-year-old son and a younger daughter, who was home at the time of the attack but was unharmed.

"They kept them busy and they supported them in everything that they did. There was not any mark that they missed with their children," Dawn Amrstrong's cousin Vaun Lee told the Houston Chronicle. "There was nothing that even could possibly have justified this situation."

Texas A&M issued a statement Friday saying Antonio Armstrong was a letterman who played for the Aggies from 1991 to 1994 and described him as a cornerstone of the A&M "Wrecking Crew" defense. He was named first-team Associated Press All-America linebacker in 1994 and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

An ankle fracture in training camp led to his release that October. He signed with the Dolphins and played in four games with Miami that season, logging four solo tackles.

After his career ended, Armstrong was a successful businessman, an assistant pastor at his mother's church and a mentor to young people. He started a YouTube channel earlier this month and posted motivational messages on it. His last video was posted to his Facebook page just a couple of hours before he was shot.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
