D-Line coach ends the speculation, plans to stay with Arkansas

Published Jan. 23, 2016 9:21 p.m. ET

Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema has unfortunately had to deal with one of his better assistants leaving for another conference opponent this offseason, but it appears he won't be dealing with another defection. Defensive line coach Rory Segrest was rumored to be jumping to the Philadelphia Eagles, however the assistant coach denied those rumors Saturday.

Segrest spent the 2006-2010 seasons on the Eagles staff, under then-head coach Andy Reid. The Eagles recently hired Reid disciple Doug Pederson as the team's new head coach. Pederson and Segrest were both on the Philadelphia staff during the 2009-10 season.

Having spent the last two seasons in Fayetteville, Segrest helped defensive linemen Trey Flowers and Darius Philon become selections in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Razorbacks also finished No. 2 in the SEC in rushing defense his first season with the team.

The rumors of Segrest's move began when John Barchard of Bleeding Green Nation Radio and 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia tweeted this out Thursday:

While losing assistant coaches isn't necessarily a bad thing -- especially if it's for a promotion -- the Razorbacks should feel fortunate to retain a coach with multiple seasons of SEC experience, not to mention the negative affects losing an assistant this close to National Signing Day could have on the team's latest recruiting class.
