Dak Prescott is the talk of the NFL

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Dak Prescott has taken the NFL by storm and everyone is talking about what a pleasant surprise he’s been for the Dallas Cowboys.

Dak has led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record so far this year including a four-game winning steak after the narrow defeat in Week 1. His rise to NFL stardom over the last two months has been incredible to watch.

When he was first named starter of the Cowboys due to Tony Romo’s injury we were excited for him and the opportunity to see him play approximately six games before Romo returned. In the back of everyone’s mind was that he wouldn’t relinquish the job but that seemed a little far fetched for a 4th round rookie vs. a veteran of multiple pro bowls.

Now we are five weeks in and national columnists are writing articles about him being the NFL MVP so far this year. Wow.

Against the Bengals on Sunday, Dak threw for 227 yards and completed 75% of his passes. He has now thrown four touchdown passes and still no interceptions.

During the game, Jim Nantz and Phil Seems remarked on the broadcast that Tony Romo has yet to start throwing the football. His anticipated return was Week 8 but they intimated that such a date seemed too optimistic, and perhaps the Cowboys would just say he’s “not ready” so long as Dak continues to play well.

Prescott has won the last two weeks without Dez Bryant as well. It’s pretty amazing to see him chasing records and winning ball games while defying the odds that he’s even a starting QB in the NFL.

Perhaps his biggest critic is Colin Cowherd. As Dak continues to succeed, Cowherd keeps digging a bigger hole for himself and it’s fun to watch.

Two years ago after MSU lost to Alabama, Cowherd remarked that Prescott was nothing more than a flash in the pan college QB who would never amount to anything more than a tight end in the NFL. During this year’s preseason he said Dak didn’t have the mental stability to be a NFL quarterback because he was got in a fight at a frat party (he was jumped at the beach) and he got a DUI (he was acquitted).

As Dak continues to win, Cowherd digs in his heals more. While he can’t possibly go back to his statements from two years ago or he’ll lose all credibility, he comes up with crazy justifications on why Dak won’t continue to succeed. Here he is two weeks ago talking about how the Cowboys wouldn’t win more than one out of their next four games with Dak at QB:

He came up with this stupid nickname for him: the “Dakuiri”. And, of course, he says “that’s how smart I am” when he came up with it.

Well, so far Dak has played two of those four games and he’s 2-0. Not so smart, Colin.
