Dana Holgorsen plays 'gunner' to fix WVU's punt game

Dana Holgorsen doesn't have any eligibility left, but that didn't stop the West Virginia coach from practicing with the punt return team at the Mountaineers first day of practice

Well, if he can do it, you'd think his players could, too.

West Virginia has had six fumbled punts in the past two seasons and couple that with the fact his team only has three returns of more than 10 yards in its past 159 attempts averaging only just 3.12 yards last season.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the punts, the WVU coverage unit was 120th in the country last season.

No wonder Holgorsen was out there giving it the old college try.

"We caught punts for 25 minutes during practice and we will also work on Nick (O'Toole) punting the ball to where he needs to punt the ball. That will fix all our problems and we should win a national championship," Holgorsen said to Metro News.

Now, Holgorsen was sort of kidding, but there's always a bit of truth in a joke, right?

According to Metro News, not a single punt was dropped Monday – the first day of practice and that's with the 44 year-old coach playing the role of "Gunner" and running down the field defending.

William Crest, Tyrek Cole, Gary Jennings, Vernon Davis, KJ Dillon and Jordan Adams are in the mix to return punts this season.
