David Shaw discusses Cal transfer Brennan Scarlett
In a nearly unprecedented move, Brennan Scarlett, a defensive lineman from Cal, transferred to Stanford earlier this offseason. Not only was it Stanford's first graduate transfer, it was most certainly one of the only transfers between the rivals.
Scarlett, who is coming off an ACL tear that ended his 2014 season, is expected to be a starter for the Cardinal. Stanford's defensive line was decimated this past offseason as all three of the teams starters are gone.
Stanford head coach David Shaw is thrilled about having Scarlett join the program and discussed his potential role.
"He's an athlete, a big athlete," Shaw told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg in Chicago, according to ESPN's David Lombardi. "He uses his hands very well, a very good pass rusher, a tough kid, smart kid. He's dealt with some injuries. Especially us this year with losing four older guys, to have a fifth-year senior who's been in battles, who's played a lot of games, who can play at a high level, is valuable."
Scarlett will join his little brother Cameron, an incoming freshman at Stanford who is also coming off a torn ACL, at Stanford this year.
