Depth chart news, Monday musings from Pinkel

Published Oct. 13, 2015 11:56 a.m. ET

Head coach Gary Pinkel announced some depth chart changes on Monday, specifically pertaining to the defensive line.

Terry Beckner, Jr. is now listed behind Rickey Hatley in the defensive tackle pecking order. The elite freshman had started the last three games before giving way to the more experienced Hatley. In Pinkel's words, he's been very impressed with the effort of his defensive front in general.

"We have just hit on a bunch of young players up front," said Pinkel. "I feel very fortunate that we have some young players that have really helped. Charles Harris is playing at a high level. Nate Howard, Josh Augusta, they're playing at a high level."

The other bit of depth chart news focuses around tight end Sean Culkin. After being ruled out of the previous two games, he's now listed as "questionable."

Not only is Culkin a productive athlete from the tight end position, but he very well could add a much-needed boost to the passing game. Freshman signal-caller Drew Lock would likely benefit from his availability.

Speaking of Lock, the young quarterback took his lumps in the loss to Florida. He completed only 41-percent of his passes, and never looked fully comfortable. He was also victimized by two interceptions.

As Pinkel said, this experience will only help his development down the line.

"It's probably as good a defensive team as we'll see all year," said Pinkel. "A lot of complex stuff out there for a guy that was playing high school football last year. I thought he did a lot of good things, no question about it. He's had some growing pains, that's part of it."

The physical side of the game is also a bit of an adjustment for Lock.

"[Lock] got hit a few times, I mean he got whacked pretty good, so welcome to SEC football, the highest level," said Pinkel. "With that said, great learning experience for him, a young player with great potential. He'll grow from it and learn, and he'll play better this week."
