Drango on QB situation against Texas: 'It was definitely interesting'
Baylor senior left tackle Spencer Drango was honored Monday night as a member of the 2015 National Football Foundation 2015 scholar-athlete class.
Drango, a projected second- or third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, holds a 3.71 GPA in finance and is working on his MBA. He is an Outland Trophy finalist and is likely to become a two-time All-America first-team selection.
On Monday, Drango talked about Baylor's 23-17 loss to Texas, a game in which the Bears started third-string quarterback Chris Johnson. But he was forced out of the game early with a concussion and Baylor was forced to use wide receiver and punt returner Lynx Hawthorne, as well as two running backs, at quarterback.
"It was definitely interesting. It wasn't planned at all," Drango said. "But all the credit for that goes to the coaches for coming up with a game plan in about 15 minutes at halftime. That seemed to be working pretty well. We couldn't really throw the ball very well, but I think we ran for close to 400 yards. That's a good game up-front. But, ultimately, it really doesn't matter who's back there. Our job up-front is just to block for whoever it is."
Texas took a 20-0 lead, but Baylor clawed back to 23-17 and had chances on its last two possessions to take the lead, despite being almost totally inept throwing the football.
Drango said he and his teammates had no doubt that they could come back and win the game despite their frustrating, and highly unusual, injury situation.
"We have a few sayings," Drango said. "One of them is there's no backup at Baylor. At any given time, you're a starter because a guy could go down and you have to be the next guy up and there can't be any drop-off. But when you're in the huddle and you're down, there really wasn't a doubt in our minds that we could come back and win."
