Duke Quarterback Daniel Jones Earns More Weekly Honors
Redshirt freshman Daniel Jones earned two more weekly top quarterback honors after leading the Blue Devils in a huge upset of Notre Dame on the road.
Duke quarterback Daniel Jones was recently named the ACC Rookie of the Week for his excellent performance against the Fighting Irish over the weekend. Jones also earned several national quarterback awards, being named Davey O’Brien “Great 8” quarterback and Manning Award Star of the Week.
The Great 8 quarterback list is made up of three quarterbacks from the ACC and SEC and two from the Pac-12 who had the top QB performances in the nation. Jones joined Lamar Jackson (Louisville) and Mitch Trubisky (UNC) as the representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference, as well as Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee), Chad Kelly (Ole Miss), Trevor Knight (Texas A&M), Steven Montez (Colorado), and Manny Wilkins (Arizona State).
The Manning Award was named after two of David Cutcliffe’s former players, Peyton and Eli Manning, as well as their father Archie to highlight the top quarterback performance of the week. Daniel Jones was listed among eight finalists including Knight, Montez, Trubisky, Jerod Evans (Virginia Tech), Riley Ferguson (Memphis), Seth Russell (Baylor), and Troy Williams (Utah). Daniel Jones threw for 290 yards, ran for 16 yards, and had three touchdown passes to help Duke earn a 38-35 victory on the road at Notre Dame on Saturday. Jones has shown flashes of his talent all season, but made crucial mistakes early on. Hopefully his performance against the Fighting Irish will help him maintain consistency throughout the season as the Blue Devils attempt to make their fifth straight bowl game appearance.
