Ex-Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman arrested on sexual assault charge
Former Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman was arrested Wednesday on sexual assault charges stemming from an incident early Sunday morning in Waco, Texas, according to local police.
Oakman is accused of sexually assaulting a fellow Baylor student at a Waco nightclub.
Oakman, 24, told police detectives that the woman gave consent before the sexual encounter. He graduated from Baylor in December and is the school's all-time sack leader.
Local police searched Oakman’s duplex last week, looking for clothing the woman left behind. Officials were also looking for any DNA evidence at his residence.
According to the affidavit, the woman met Oakman at the bar and he asked her to return to his duplex, where he “forced” her into a bedroom. The affidavit states that Oakman “forcibly removed” the woman’s clothes and sexually assaulted her.
The woman went to the hospital after the alleged assault, according to court records. According to court documents, police seized two comforters, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet from Oakman’s bedroom.
This is the latest incident involving the Baylor football program. Two former Baylor players were convicted of sexual assault in 2014 and 2015. One of the victims claims the school didn’t protect here and has filed a federal lawsuit against the university. The school said it committed $5 million in February to improve its response to sexual assault.
Oakman was named third-team All-America despite having a disappointing season in 2015. He had 4 1/2 sacks but still finished as Baylor’s all-time leader in sacks (17 1/2) and is second on tackles-for-loss with 46.
Oakman, 6-8, 287 pounds, began his college career at Penn State but then-Nittany Lions coach Bill O’Brien kicked him off the team after he was accused of attempting to steal food from a campus store.
