FCS teams keep it close versus FBS
(STATS) - Close losses to bigger FBS programs left some FCS teams wanting more on Saturday.
Youngstown State and Portland State had to take solace in pushing their opponents to the brink before they headed home with defeats. Youngstown State fell to Pittsburgh 28-21 in overtime and Portland State had a game-ending field-goal attempt misfire in a 35-32 loss to Oregon State.
Stony Brook enjoyed a halftime lead on No. 19 South Florida and hung tough deep into the fourth quarter until a late touchdown helped the Bulls hand the Seawolves a 31-17 loss.
Also, Southeastern Louisiana came up just short of Louisiana-Lafayette 51-48 as they renewed their rivalry for the first time since 1981. After pulling within 49-48 with 42 seconds left, the Southland Conference squad went for a 2-point conversion and a potential win, but the Ragin Cajuns returned a fumble for two points.
Four FCS teams broke through for wins in the first full week of college football - top-ranked James Madison was favored before it posted a 34-14 win over East Carolina; Tennessee State beat Georgia State 17-10; Liberty edged Baylor 48-45; and Howard stunned UNLV 43-40.
