Fighting Irish have multiple potential replacements at tight end

Published Sep. 17, 2015 3:30 p.m. ET

While much of the attention this week has gone to how Notre Dame will move on without quarterback Malik Zaire, he was not the only starter lost to a season-ending injury last week.

NDInsider notes Durham Smythe's knee injury leaves a void that has plenty of potential but no one who is as good all around.

Sophomore Tyler Luatua is listed atop the newest depth chart published for the Georgia Tech game with true freshman Alize Jones, sophomore Nic Weishar and senior Chase Hounshell listed behind him.

"I think each one of them has some different levels of, I want to say, expertise, but strengths relative to what we think they can do," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said this week. "I think you'll see them all play, no question. I don't think there is just one guy. I think Durham was able to do a lot of different things, so now I think you'll see we'll go deeper with the tight ends.

"But (I) feel very confident that in all of them that we'll get the kind of play necessary at that position."

Per NDInsider, Hounsell and Luatua bring more from a blocking standpoint while Jones and Weishar are greater passing threats.
