Fitzgerald won't rush QB decision for Wildcats

Published Aug. 3, 2015 12:31 p.m. ET

The Northwestern Wildcats find themselves coming into the 2015 season with a quarterback battle after losing veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian to graduation.

The ‘Cats have a three man race going between senior Zack Oliver, sophomore Matt Alviti, and redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson that will rage on during fall camp. During Big Ten Media Days, Pat Fitzgerald was asked when he would name a starter during his Q&A session:

"I'm a little surprised it took this long for that question," Fitzgerald said. "But we've been here before. ... We'd rather have it happen organically than to force something. At this point, we're not ready and prepared to inject right now and be forceful either because all three guys have had a good summer from a leadership standpoint. I think they're all in really good shape, and now we're going to roll the ball out and let it play."

The Wildcats have other questions they will need to answer to have a successful 2015 campaign but don’t expect the quarterback battle to be on the back burner for long. Fitz may keep the element of surprise all the way until September 5th when the Wildcats host Stanford.
