Five-star recruit Jeffery Simmons commits to Mississippi State

Published Feb. 3, 2016 2:14 p.m. ET

Mississippi State finally got one of the big in-state fish, as five-star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons committed to the Bulldogs over Ole Miss and Alabama. Simmons was thought to be leaning toward joining the Rebels recruiting class, which makes the commitment even bigger for MSU.

Simmons, a 2016 U.S. Army All-American, is rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 prospect from Mississippi according to 247Sports. The commitment helps salvage the Bulldogs latest recruiting class, which had suffered the loss of several top in-state prospects on National Signing Day.

The recruiting victory for MSU was particularly important for the fact it keeps Simmons away from division rivals Ole Miss and Alabama. The Rebels in particular seemed to assume the top defensive lineman was headed to Oxford.
