Former UCLA offensive lineman finds a new way to 'protect' the Bruins

Lacy Westbrook says that playing football at Compton Dominguez High saved his life; when he collapsed during a workout four years ago, however, his future was uncertain.

Already committed to play offensive line for UCLA, Westbrook (no relation to the basketball star from UCLA, Russell Westbrook) spent 10 days in the hospital after receiving an aneurysm diagnosis. When he was released, the team doctor ruled against Westbrook joining the football program because of liability issues.

But UCLA kept him on scholarship -- he is on pace to graduate next spring with a history degree -- even though he never played a down on the field.

"I missed football," Westbrook told the LA Times. "I wanted to get involved again."

Flash forward, Westbrook is now UCLA's "gatekeeper" in practice and prevents opponents from recording the workouts. He also ushers recruits around the Rose Bowl on game day.
