Four Miami Hurricanes Named Academic All-ACC

Led by former Quarterback Brad Kaaya, four Miami Hurricanes have been named to the ACC’s All-Academic team.

In an ACC press release “To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his undergraduate and/or graduate academic career.”

The ACC has released an Academic All Conference team in every year since 1954. The team was chosen from 143 players that were nominated by their schools.

Other Miami players joining Kaaya were Junior Wide Receiver Braxton Berrios from Raleigh, North Carolina who is majoring in Entrepreneurship, Junior Center Nick Linder from Fort Lauderdale who is majoring in Finance, and Senior Punter Justin Vogel from Tampa who will graduate with a degree in Health Sciences General.

Kaaya, Vogel and Linder were also on the 2015 Academic All-ACC team. Lineman Alex Gall also made the 2015 team. Five Hurricanes made the 2014 team, including Vogel and Berrios. Going back to 2013, only two Hurricanes made the team.

The players named do not make up a team in the truest sense of the word. The only running back named was Virginia Tech’s Sam Rogers. Kaaya was one of six Quarterbacks named.

Duke had the most players on the team with 14. Wake Forest’s Ryan Janvion a safety from Pembroke Pines was awarded the league’s Jim Tatum award in December as the Top Scholar-Athlete in the ACC.

Kaaya is off to the NFL after a record setting three seasons as the Miami starting quarterback. He passed Ken Dorsey in 2016 for the school’s all-time passing record with 9,968 yards, and finished second all-time with 71 touchdown passes, behind Dorsey’s 86.

Berrios finished the 2016 season fourth in the ACC with an 11.3 yard average on Punt Returns. He added 12 receptions for 173 yards and two touchdowns. With Stacy Coley, David Njoku and Malcolm Lewis gone from the 2016 team, Berrios should get a chance to compete for a starting spot in 2017.

Linder has started 21 games at Center over the last two seasons. He missed the final five games of the 2016 season after suffering a season ending shoulder injury against Pittsburgh. Vogel was named second team All-ACC punter after averaging 43.8 yards per punt in 2016.
