Jonny West threw for five touchdowns and 448 yards as Franklin used a big second half to pull past Valparaiso 49-35 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

The game was tied at 28 at halftime after West connected on touchdown throws of 65 and 59 yards. The Division III Grizzlies pulled ahead after a short scoring run by Ethan Cook and two more touchdown passes by West after that. Cook finished with 115 yards running.

The Crusaders began the game with a 61-yard interception return by Alan Porter and added short first-half scoring runs by Ryan Lehr and quarterback Eric Hoffman. Gabe Ali-El also snagged a pass from Hoffman for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Hoffman completed 27 of 42 for 394 yards. Bobby Wysocki led the Crusaders in running with 29 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
