Freshman WR making early push for playing time
On Saturday, we got an early look at some of the young Hawkeyes in close to game action as the team held their first scrimmage of the season.
There has been lots of buzz about the freshman wide receivers going back to when the trip signed with Iowa back in February but the buzz for Jerminic Smith has continued into the fall.
He had a solid showing during the scrimmage and has the attention of his teammates including cornerback Greg Mabin
"As far as receiver-wise, Jerminic Smith, he's a guy that runs good routes," Mabin said. "Like everyone else, he still has a couple things to work on but he definitely has a lot of potential."
Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz hinted that he will be in the mix for playing time:
"He did (take a step forward today," head coach Kirk Ferentz admitted about Jerminic's performance at practice on Saturday. "It was good to see. We haven't seen him do quite that yet, but it was good to see him make some tough catches. That still really is an open book for us. Our minds are very wide open on the receiver position."
It is always a difficult task to play as a true freshman at receiver but a speedy playmaker on the outside is just what the doctor ordered for a stagnant Iowa offense.
