FSU coach Jimbo Fisher: Quarterbacks will share reps
The Florida State quarterback position is up for grabs, as Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher said that all three of his QBs will begin camp getting an equal amount of snaps.
The Seminoles enter the fall practice period with redshirt junior Sean Maguire listed atop the depth chart, with redshirt freshman J.J. Cosentino right behind him and Notre Dame senior transfer Everett Golson at the three spot.
However, Fisher warned not to read too much into the depth chart.
“Depth charts right now mean nothing,” Fisher told ESPN. “Everybody will get the same amount of reps. … That’s how we’ve approached it every year. Every job is open based on who plays the best.”
Fisher said that applies to every position, not just the quarterbacks.
“It doesn’t matter because there is no set No. 1s. We don’t know who the No. 1 wideouts are, don’t know what the No. 1 O-line is,” Fisher told ESPN. “There are no set starters.”
Maguire has been with Fisher and FSU the longest, and last season he filled in for a suspended Jameis Winston and delivered 23-17 OT victory over No. 17 Clemson.
Maguire finished the season completing 25 of his 49 pass attempts for 339 yard and one touchdown.
However, a less-than-stellar spring game, coupled with the arrival of the electric Golson from Notre Dame, has led to a wide open QB battle.
Fisher said that whether or not Golson can grab the No. 1 spot could hinge on how fast he grasps the offense.
“Knowing it in the classroom and on the board is different from when it starts flying,” Fisher told ESPN. “He’s played in a lot of big games and a lot of big situations, but I’m sure he’ll be nervous out there like a freshman today.”
