Georgia mascot Uga IX to be retired, replaced this fall

Georgia's famed mascot, Uga, will go through a transition this fall, with Uga IX being retired and replaced by Uga X, who is yet to be selected.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Uga IX, also known as Russ, recently turned 11 and is set to be phased out this year. He has been the Georgia mascot since 2012 after having spent three years before that as interim mascot.

The Journal-Constitution also reported that the top candidate to replace Uga IX is his grandson, an English Bulldog named Que who is 1 year old.

Que attended a photo event as part of a tryout last week at Sanford Stadium with owner Charles Seiler, whose family has been breeding the line of bulldogs for more than a half-century.

"We're training Que to see if he can be the new Uga," Seiler said. "We've got two others that we can choose from, but it's his turn first. So this is his first gig."
