When the Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver Geronimo Allison it was a pretty big deal.

Allison, a former Illinois football standout, failed to get drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft.  But, after all, the dust settled, he ended up getting signed by the Green Bay Packers in free agency.

The deal that Allison signed was 3-years, 1.62-million dollars.  He still had a lot of work left to do to just make the roster, though.

Allison managed to make the team but was relegated to the practice squad.  This was better than being cut, but the ultimate goal of playing on Sunday’s still had yet to come to fruition.

This past weekend things all changed, though.  The Packers, already thin at wide receiver, had Randall Cobb out with a hamstring injury.

Green Bay also had wide receiver turned running back Ty Montgomery out as well.  This left a few spots to fill and that is when Allison received the call.

More from Writing Illini

Allison received playing time against the Atlanta Falcons and took advantage of the passes that were thrown to him.

At the end of the game the Packers lost, but Allison finished with 2 receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown.  He was targeted a total of 4 times on the day.

The future is bright for Allison and I think he is right where he needs to be as far as his career is concerned.

Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and Allison has the opportunity to have him as his quarterback.  That is every wide receivers dream come true.

Also, Green Bay is always thin at the wide receiver position.

Jordy Nelson is their clear No. 1 wide receiver.  But, beyond him, there are a lot of question marks.

Randall Cobb is good but it seems like he is always getting hurt.  He has also slumped a lot over the last year or so.

There are way too many drops by the other wide receivers on the team.  I think this leaves plenty of room for Allison to make his mark on the league.

Even though I hate the Green Bay Packers, I think if Allison stays there he will have a great career.  He has all the tools and, hopefully, he continues to see passes thrown his way.
