Gundy apprehensive on bringing title game to Big 12
With the momentum it's stockpiled this spring, Oklahoma State could very well be in contention to make the College Football Playoff in 2015 and become the first Big 12 team to do so.
That is, assuming the Cowboys wouldn't be spurned a shot at a national title like TCU and Baylor in 2014, snubs that most felt were heavily influenced by the Big 12's lack of championship game.
Despite the chorus of pleads from Big 12 country to implement a title game as a security measure for inclusion in the CFP, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy isn't certain it's the best step to take.
"We have to be very cautious," Gundy said in this week's Big 12 coaches teleconference.
"Having a team that could run through this undefeated, and then you play against an opponent that very well could have two losses, and that team beats the team that is undefeated, and then you knock that team out. That could happen, and that's why you have to be careful about bringing a conference championship back into the league."
Gundy maintains that the conference's clout is all the credibility it needs for the playoff committee.
"There's enough respect for the Big 12 now that you're going to get a team in in most cases," he said. "Nobody will ever know if TCU or Baylor would have been named the conference champion last year, they very well could have gotten in that fourth spot. If you win this league, you're going to get a lot of respect from the committee."
