Gundy: 'We hit a home run' with new additions to OSU's coaching staff
Having a productive college football program often has the adverse effect of creating high demand for its coaches.
Mike Gundy knows all about that phenomenon. He's had many an assistant coach leave Stillwater for better opportunities, and recently had to reload his coaching staff after losing a handful of coaches to the NFL and other college programs.
However, Gundy, who has become quite experienced in rebuilding his coaching staff, assembled a corps of new coaches this offseason that he's very proud of.
After losing a flurry of coaches, Gundy moved quickly, hiring Greg Adkins from the Buffalo Bills as offensive line coach, Marcus Arroyo from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as running backs coach, veteran Houston assistant Dan Hammerschmidt as safeties coach, and former FCS assistant coach of the year James McEndoo to coach the tight ends.
He also brought aboard former OSU defensive coordinator Bill Clay and former Texas co-offensive coordinator and once-OSU assistant Darrell Wyatt to serve as analysts.
"I'm very comfortable with where we're at and with the direction of our program," Gundy told Go Pokes. "A big part of that is the coaches that I brought in. I don't think it could have turned out any better."
While it often takes a while for coaches to become integrated into a new program, Gundy says OSU's new additions have experienced an immediate immersion.
"Our players have quickly developed great relationships with our coaches. You can see that they respect our coaches and what they are trying to teach and work with them each day in practice. It happened so quick with Coach Adkins and the offensive line, same with Coach Arroyo and the running backs. Coach McEndoo brings so much enthusiasm and Coach Hammer is such a veteran coach. I really do feel like we hit a home run with all of the coaching hires."
