Hampton tops MEAC rival Delaware State for 5th straight time (Sep 08, 2017)

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Delmon Williams threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead Hampton past Delaware State 28-15 on Friday night in the MEAC rival opener for both teams.

Hampton (1-1) has won five straight games in the series and seven of the last eight.

Delaware State (0-2) has lost 13 straight games, dating to last season, and hasn't won on the road since 2014.

On the first offensive play after Delaware State took a 15-14 lead, Aulden Knight raced for a 78-yard touchdown to give Hampton a 21-15 lead just before halftime. Yahkee Johnson's 15-yard touchdown run at the 12:13 mark of the fourth quarter were the only points of the second half.

Knight had four catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored from 48 yards out to cap a two-play drive for a 14-12 lead.

Jack McDaniels was 15-of-30 passing for 156 yards for Delaware State. His 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal gave the Hornets a 12-7 lead.

Hampton's punter had the ball go through his hands for a safety in the first quarter. Following the free kick, Delaware State went on a 14-play, 63-yard drive to take a 5-0 lead on a short field goal.
