Virginia Tech drops out of CFP Poll after loss to Georgia Tech

After dropping their second conference game on the season last Saturday against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to bring their record to 7-3 overall (5-2 ACC), the Virginia Tech Hokies fell out of the newest ESPN College Football Playoff Poll that was released on Tuesday night.

The Hokies were ranked at number 14 in the second poll of the season that was released last week, but after turnovers mired their debacle against the listless Yellow Jackets, the Hokies were promptly dropped from the newest version of the only rankings that matter during this time of year.

Although the Hokies never had a truly realistic chance to make the playoff after losses to Tennessee and Syracuse, the Georgia Tech loss signified that this Hokies team may not be quite as good as many made them out to be.

While improved from the teams of recent years, the Hokies still have a bit of a ways to go before making considerable noise in the playoff chase.

At this point, the silver lining for Virginia Tech is that they still control their own destiny in terms of their chances of winning the Coastal Division and clinching a trip to the ACC Championship for the first time since the 2011 season.

The Hokies face off against the struggling Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in a non-conference tilt this coming Saturday before returning home on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to face in-state rival Virginia.

If the Hokies defeat the Cavaliers in the season finale, they will secure a trip to the ACC Championship game in early December, where they will most likely face off against the Clemson Tigers (barring something catastrophic).

Thus, while the latest Georgia Tech loss may be troubling, there is plenty left to play for if you’re a Virginia Tech Hokie.
