How to survive outside the Power 5: Win and win big

Published Jun. 26, 2015 1:40 a.m. ET

Life can be tough outside the Power 5, but for BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall the key to keeping up with college football's elite programs is pretty simple.

“We will schedule the best teams that will play us and we will play them anytime and anywhere,” Mendenhall said on during Wednesday’s media day.

Mendenhall isn’t lying. The Cougars will begin the season playing at Nebraska, then head home to host Boise State before playing at UCLA and then Michigan.

While Mendenhall enjoys beating Power 5 teams on the field, he doesn’t mind doing the same off of it, as he evident by the following statement.

“The branding of the SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten and Pac 12, those commissioners of those conferences are going head to head for revenue and resources. I’m not sure it’s in the best interest of the student-athlete. It is not being done in the interest of college football, but brand over brand,” said Mendenhall.
