Hurricane Harvey could impact Richmond-Sam Houston game
(STATS) - Sam Houston State officials say they are considering all factors regarding their athletic events this weekend, including Sunday night's home football game against Richmond, with impending inclement weather issues due to Hurricane Harvey.
Harvey could increase to a Category 3 hurricane as it heads for the Texas Gulf Coast and other parts of southeast Texas. The hurricane could hit the coastline Friday night or early Saturday and may stall over the state, forecasters say.
Sam Houston's campus is located in Huntsville, about 120 miles north of the coastline in Galveston.
"Obviously it is a very fluid situation that we are dealing with, and we will continue to monitor the storm before making a final decision regarding Sunday," athletic director Bobby Williams said. "The safety of both teams, personnel and fans are of the utmost importance and we expect to make a decision soon that is in the best interest of all involved. I would also like to thank the officials from the University of Richmond for their patience and cooperation in the handling of this situation."
Kickoff for the football game between No. 3 Sam Houston and No. 7 Richmond is 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The Bearkats' men's soccer team also has home matches scheduled against Jackson State on Friday evening and Oral Roberts on Sunday morning.
