Illinois Football: Good Luck Desmond Cain and Your Future In Football

When the Illinois football team hired Lovie Smith back in March, I kind of figured there were going to be a few transfers after the 2016 season.

But, before the season started I didn’t think Desmond Cain was going to be the first player to leave the program.

Yesterday, Cain announced that he will be leaving the program and transferring to be closer to his family in Delray Beach, Florida.

When Cain came out of the class of 2015 he was a solid get for the Illini.  He was listed as a 3-star safety but later transitioned into a wide receiver under Bill Cubit.

Cain’s freshman season was impressive.  He caught 53 passes for 492 yards and 1 touchdown.  I thought this production would increase in 2016, but we didn’t get to see him shine.

The 2016 season was plagued with injuries for Cain.  He was injured for six games this season and only had a chance to play in five other games.

The production just wasn’t there when Cain played either.  He only ended the season with 5 receptions for 61 yards and 1 touchdown.

I was thinking Cain was poised to have a great 2016 campaign.  In my season preview, I had him pegged to be one of the leading wide receivers on the team, but things just didn’t pan out for his sophomore year.

Now Cain is going to be transferring and starting over.  This is sort of a ‘flipping over of a new leaf’ for him and his career.

I am not sure where Cain is going to play football next, but wherever it is, I am sure he will find success.  There is a lot of upside to this kid.

I hope nothing but the best for Cain in the future.  The sky is the limit for this talented wide receiver.
