Inside the numbers of Michigan's massive new Nike contract
The second-largest apparel contract in college sports is signed, sealed and about to be delivered to the University of Michigan in the form of $173.8 million from Nike through 2031.
The deal, which begins Aug. 1 and replaces Adidas as the school’s apparel provider, was agreed to last summer but was signed in March, which gave Mlive.com a chance to get a look at the details.
The contract was the largest in college sports when it was agreed to, but Nike has since topped the deal with a whopping $250 million agreement with the University of Texas. (In case you’re wondering, Notre Dame checks in at a distant No. 3 with $90 million over 10 years from Under Armour.)
But back to the details of Michigan’s deal:
• It runs through 2031 only if Michigan picks up a four-year option to extend it past 2027.
• Michigan will get $85 million in Nike apparel and products and $88.8 million in base compensation over the length of the contract.
• The football and basketball programs will be outfitted in the Jordan “Jumpman” brand, which will make Michigan’s football team the first in the country to wear the basketball-inspired Jordan logo.
• Nike will pay Michigan plenty of performance-based bonuses, the most notable being $100,000 for a football national title, $50,000 for a football national title game appearance, $25,000 for a college football playoff semifinal appearance and $25,000 for a men’s basketball national title.
Bottom line: Michigan won’t just look good for the next 15 years, it’ll be paid handsomely to do so.
