Instant Reaction: LSU Tigers Dismantle Missouri

The LSU Tigers topped Missouri by a final score of 42-7 on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. The win was the first of the post-Les Miles era at LSU, and was a critical game for the Tigers if they are to get back into championship contention. Throughout the course of the game, I jotted down my thoughts on the team’s play, so here are my “instant reacations” to LSU’s blowout win.

First Half Thoughts

Offense: 

The LSU offense really could not have played any better than they did in the first half of this football game. The Tigers put up 21 points, moving the ball up-and-down the field with relative ease.

The combination of Darrius Guice and Darrell Williams in the backfield proved to be far too much for Missouri. Combined, the pair rushed for 227 yards IN THE FIRST HALF. Guice scored all three of the team’s touchdowns, and Williams made sure the team saw no drop in production when Guice took a breather.

We saw a fantastic mix of passing as well, something we desperatly hoped to get with Les Miles and Cam Cameron gone. The coaches put Danny Etling in great positions, and he delivered.

Defense:

Much like the offense, the defensive unit did everything we could have possible asked of them. Going up against one of the SEC’s best passers, many expected the Tigers to have trouble with the Missouri offense.

That wasn’t the case, as the LSU defense met the challenge head on and held the explosive offense to well under 150 yards in the half. No matter what they tried, Missouri could not move the football against the Tigers.

Second Half Thoughts

Offense:

The second half was much of the same. The LSU rushing attack continued to dominate the Missouri defense, and by the end, the visiting Tigers had all but waived the white flag. Derrius Guice and Darrell Williams continued to pile on the yardage, and Etling did a good job managing the offense.

As the fourth quarter came to a close, we saw the second-stringers run the final minutes off the clock.

A lot of positives to take away from this one from an offensive standpoint. The Tigers put up 634 yard of offense, showed how deep they are at the running back position, and Etling did a great job throwing the football.

Defense:

From the moment the defense sniffed a shutout early in the second half, you could see just how badly they wanted it. The Tigers played all out to hold Missouri scoreless, but the shutout was lost after they allowed a late touchdown on a trick play.

Overall, the Tiger defense played extremely well, and held a statistically elite offense to very little production. Pure domination, not much else to add.

Overall Takeaway: 

Not much to say on this game. It was a pretty straightforward performance by the LSU Tigers. Ed Orgeron’s team dominated in all three phases of the game, and he picked up his first win as the head coach in Baton Rouge. He and his staff did a fantastic job of mixing up the calls on offense and getting production throwing the football. If the coaches can continue to implement changes and the players continue to buy in, this is only the begining of what they can do.
