Iowa Football: Hawkeyes Drop From AP Poll, Stay in Coaches Poll
A look at the latest AP Poll and Coaches Poll following week three
There was a little hope that the Iowa Hawkeyes would remain ranked following their last second loss to the North Dakota State Bison. Sadly, the Hawkeyes fell from the AP Poll top-25 after 14 consecutive weeks. The Hawkeyes did receive 47 votes, making them the unofficial 30th ranked team in the nation.
The Bison, who are now 3-0 on the season, tied with California for the second most votes outside of the top-25. It’s the highest ranked FCS team in the history of the AP Poll.
Despite falling outside the top-25 in the AP Poll, the Hawkeyes are still ranked #25 in the Coaches Poll. The AP Poll carries more weight, however it’s still a glimmer of hope for a team who suffered their first loss in over a year.
Iowa also has a very good chance to break the top-25 in the AP Poll later in the year. With Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska all on their schedule, the Hawkeyes have plenty of fire power to finish decent in the Polls.

Ohio State jumped to #2 in the nation following their big win over Oklahoma and Florida State’s historically embarrassing loss to Louisville. The Louisville Cardinals are ranked #3 this week, the highest ranking of their program’s history.
Michigan stays at #4 and Michigan State jumps into the top-10 at #8. The Spartans are coming off a very impressive win over Notre Dame, who fell from the rankings. Wisconsin dropped to #11 but Nebraska jumped into the top-25 at #20 this week, giving the Big Ten five teams this week, despite the Hawkeyes dropping out.
If Iowa is able to turn their season around, they have a chance to crack the top-25, again, and give the Big Ten a very good six teams. It won’t happen all at once, however a strong performance in the Big Ten will carry a decent amount of weight considering the surprise strength of the conference this year.
San Diego State at #22 and Utah at #24 both jumped into the top-25, as well. The SEC also has eight teams still in the top-25, including Ole Miss who is only 1-2 on the season.
A look at the top 10 teams in the AP Poll this week:
1. Alabama Crimson Tide 3-0
2. Ohio State Buckeyes 3-0
3. Louisville Cardinals 3-0
4. Michigan Wolverines 3-0
5. Clemson Tigers 3-0
6. Houston Cougars 3-0
7. Stanford Cardinal 2-0
8. Michigan State Spartans 3-0
9. Washington Huskies 3-0
10. Texas A&M 3-0
The Hawkeyes will play on the road for the first time this week at Rutgers. While a win over Rutgers might not catapult them back into the top-25, it’s a game they can’t afford to lose. Voters will be watching to see how the Hawkeyes bounce back from their only loss in the C.J. Beathard era.
