Is Ross the forgotten one at running back?

Published Aug. 11, 2015 10:57 a.m. ET

Alex Ross averaged almost 7 yards per carry last season. He scored four rushing touchdowns and ran for 595 yards.

He was also one of the most-dangerous return men in college football, named to the All-Big 12 team by a number of sources. Twice he scored on kick returns in 2014 and he averaged 27.6 yards per return on 26 chances. Last season he had 144 rushing on just 13 carries against Iowa State.

It's clear the junior from Jenks, Okla., has some ability.

But no one is talking much about him this season.

That's because Ross is seemingly behind Samaje Perine, who led the team in rushing last season and set the NCAA record for rushing yards in a game when he went off against Kansas.

Meanwhile, there's also the saga of Joe Mixon. Mixon is one of the most-talked about freshman in the country after coming out of high school as a five-star recruit. Mixon sat out last season due to a suspension. But Mixon figures to get on the field quite a bit this season. And of course, Perine is an outside contender for the Heisman Trophy.

So. Where does that leave Ross?

"No, I don't feel left out," Ross said. "It doesn't matter. We all work hard. Play hard. It's all good. I don't worry about stuff like that. I just try to go hard."
