In an effort to become more educated on the link between traumatic brain injuries and the game of football, former NFL quarterback Joe Namath announced he will ultimately donate his brain for scientific research (per a report from AL.com).

Namath has been championing the cause for more information on the serious issue plaguing many former and current NFL athletes. The Joe Namath Neurological Research Center in Jupiter, Fla. was set up to "investigate new ways to reverse brain injury and improve long-term recovery."

The former New York Jets legend has raised $10 million for clinical trials of hyperbaric oxygen on 100 subjects afflicted by brain damage. He himself took 120 treatments of the oxygen -- with brain scans indicating improved blood flow to the left side of his brain.

As Namath said, the eventual donation of his brain is an attempt to look at the bigger picture, in terms of helping those beset by brain damage -- and eventually finding a cure.
