Kansas tackler who injured Cummings torn up about spring game accident
This isn't quite how Mike Glatczak wanted to finish a pivotal spring in which he's competing for a starting spot at cornerback.
Glatczak is guilt-sodden after accidentally tackling and injuring Kansas' leading candidate for starting quarterback, rising senior Michael Cummings, during KU's spring game.
"It was the first thing he wanted to talk about when we spoke after the scrimmage,” Glatczak's father, Larry, told the Topeka Capital-Journal. “He told me, ‘I feel like crap.’"
Cummings was wearing a red jersey during the spring game, which distinguishes players who are not supposed to be hit.
The hit Glatczak delivered ended up being serious and will cause Cummings to have surgery on his left knee.
"It was a complete freak accident," Beaty said in a statement. "I have reviewed the film from Saturday and Michael Glatczak was being blocked down the field and had his back to the action for almost the entire play. At the last second he turned to make the tackle without having any idea who was carrying the ball. He is a great kid, a great teammate and again it was just a very unfortunate accident."
Glatczak may be torn up about the costly accident, but both Cummings and head coach David Beaty have been forgiving about the accident.
"I told him to talk coach Beaty, talk to coach (Clint) Bowen, explain what you’re feeling." Larry Glatczak said. "They’re both class acts. They understood.”
