King's 3 TDs help Houston beat Prairie View 37-17
HOUSTON (AP) — D'Eriq King threw for a touchdown and ran for two more scores as Houston beat Prairie View 37-17 on Saturday night.
King was 15-of-26 passing for 139 yards for the Cougars (1-1). Kyle Porter ran for 120 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Dalton Witherspoon kicked three field goals.
The Cougars struck early, capping their first drive with Witherspoon's longest field goal of the night, a 46-yarder. They then scored on four-consecutive drives, starting with a 20-yard touchdown run by Porter, followed by a 1-yard keeper by King, a 21-yard pass from King to Keith Corbin to finish the first quarter, and finally, an 18-yard dash by King to make it 31-3 with 10:25 left in the half. Witherspoon booted a 22-yard field goal late in the quarter and the Cougars were up 34-10 at the break.
Houston scored only once in the second half, on Witherspoon's 29-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, to push it to 37-10.
Trazon Connley threw for 129 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (1-1).
