Lack of QBs aids Boykin in Heisman race dominated by RBs
Trevone Boykin entered the season as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner and there's no reason to believe his status has changed through two weeks.
No, he didn't have the best of starts in the season-opener at Minnesota -- and no doubt perception of his performance would have changed drastically had he hit a coupe of wide-open receivers for sure touchdowns.
Boykin was in pretty good form last week in a 70-7 dismantling of FSC Stephen F. Austin. He threw for four touchdowns and 285 yards in one half and one possession, completing 18 of his 27 pass completions.

Even a year filled with legitimate quarterback candidates, the dynamic, dual-threat Boykin would be at or near the top of the list. But there aren't many QB candidate out there, and the field narrowed last weekend with the gruesome injury sustained by Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire. Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is considered a candidate, but QB-turned-WR Braxton Miller might be the better choice at this early stage. First-year Baylor starter Seth Russell is also mentioned, but he's yet to be tested.
The running back competition is stout with three backs from the SEC: LSU's Leonard Fournette, Georgia's Nick Chubb and Alabama's Derrick Henry; plus Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott.

Boykin's ability to keep plays alive with mesmerizing jukes and flat-out sprinter's speed to go with a canon for an arm that hit a stable of speedy and reliable receivers in stride in a spread offense, make Boykin the most dangerous player of the candidates.
With No. 3 taking on SMU this week and then opening Big 12 play at Texas Tech were the Red Raiders are still struggling to put together a cohesive defensive unit, expect Boykin's numbers to spike, as well as his chances of surging in the Heisman race.
