Leonard Fournette Injury: LSU RB Won't Play vs. Jacksonville State

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

LSU running back Leonard Fournette reportedly will not play in tonight’s game against Jacksonville State. His status moving forward is also unclear.

The LSU Tigers are expected to get a win in tonight’s game against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. However, the Tigers are going to have to win without their star running back, Leonard Fournette.

In their season opener, the Tigers were handed a tough loss to the Wisconsin Badgers at Lambeau Field. During the game, Fournette suffered a bruised left ankle, a similar injury to the one he had during the preseason. According to Bryan Lazare from Rivals, the injury will keep Fournette out of tonight’s game against Jacksonville State and possibly next week against Mississippi State.

Despite LSU’s struggles offensively against Wisconsin, Fournette was still able to run for 138 yards while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Many are expecting Fournette to be a top 10 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, but his hopes at winning the Heisman Trophy are not looking great if he’s expected to miss one or possibly two games.

At this point, many are suggesting that Fournette shouldn’t risk getting injured this season and sit out the year before going to the NFL. Many remember what happened to Marcus Lattimore when he suffered a career-ending injury with South Carolina.

Fournette probably won’t sit out intentionally, but he may have to wait a couple of weeks before he suits up for the Tigers again.
