Lockie takes the reigns at Oregon

Published Apr. 29, 2015 2:29 p.m. ET

It is one of the most anticipated QB battles this year: Jeff Lockie versus Vernon Adams Jr. for the right to replace 2014 Heisman winner Marcus Mariota.

While Adams won't be in Eugene until the middle of June, which is when he graduates from Eastern Washington, Lockie has been running the show for the Ducks this spring.

Lockie, who has served as Mariota's backup for each of the past two seasons, was expected to win the starting QB job before Adams announced his transfer to Oregon. Now, with a wildly successful FCS starter coming into to compete with him, Lockie has had to step up his game during the spring.

While Lockie didn't have the chance to secure his name atop the depth chart this spring, he is Oregon's top option heading into the spring game, which will be held on Saturday.

Oregon's other QBs include Ty Griffin, Taylor Alie, Morgan Mahalak and Travis Jonsen. While all will likely see playing time in Oregon's spring game, it is Lockie who has the most to gain by playing well on Saturday.
