Louisville Football: Checking the pulse of the season

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Louisville football team is now through their first five games of the season as we check on the pulse of the program.

Regardless of the tough loss for the Louisville football team last weekend, it has been a fun football season around Cardinal country. Sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson has been playing at an elite level, the Cardinals are in the top ten, and the outlook for the rest of the season looks very promising.

There have been a lot of players that have been huge for the Cardinals so far and there have been a few guys who have won over the hearts of the Louisville faithful by their play. Jaire Alexander and James Hearns have been two guys who have exceeded expectations so far this season. Both have had huge games against Clemson and Florida State and fans can expect them to have even more great performances for the rest of 2016.

Louisville currently sits at number seven in the country and second in the Atlantic Division in the ACC. Even though the loss to Clemson makes the season look a little disappointing, I couldn’t disagree more.

The Cardinals still have a high-quality opponent at the end of the year in the Houston Cougars. By that point, that could be another top-five matchup that could launch Louisville into the College Football Playoff. There are still many people who feel as though the Cardinals should make it into the top four.

All things considered, Louisville football is in a good position. Not great, but still good. There are many national writers who think the Cardinals are for real and they still have seven games left to prove their worthiness.

The Cardinals now set their eyes on the Duke Blue Devils. Game on.
