Louisville football: ESPN's bold prediction for 2016

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

ESPN gave Louisville football more attention this afternoon after they brought Louisville into one of their bold ACC predictions.

Louisville football is down to the last few days before their season opener against the Charlotte 49ers on Thursday evening. Over this slow, but exciting offseason, the Cardinals hype-train has been gaining steam. This is largely due to sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson, however Louisville has much more than just a star quarterback returning in 2016.

Clemson and Florida State are Louisville’s biggest obstacles heading into this year. The Cardinals have struggled with both school’s football teams in the past, this may be the year that Louisville gets over the hurdle.

There will be a three-way tie atop the Atlantic Division: A lot of pundits are picking Clemson to repeat as the Atlantic Division champion. A few others think Florida State gets back on top this year. Even a few stragglers are daring to pick upstart Louisville. But here’s the really fun pick: All of the above. What if Louisville pulls the upset against Florida State on Sept. 17, then falls at Clemson on Oct. 1? That puts the Tigers in the driver’s seat for the division, but they still have to go on the road and beat the Seminoles.

This is definitely one of the more interesting scenarios that had been brought up thus far. While Louisville may be the third best team among the other two, they do have the talent to bring home a win or two this season. It may be more realistic that the Cardinals beat one of the other schools, but it’s college football and crazier things have happened.

Best case scenario this season for Louisville is that they would get a chance to play in the ACC Championship game. If they get through that game, then the College Football Playoff would be a realistic possibility. If that happens, excitement and chaos will surely reign throughout the state.
