Louisville Football: Stomaching the ugly truth about the Cardinals

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

It has been a very disappointing end of the season for the Louisville football team, especially now that the Orange Bowl may be out of the picture.

The Louisville football has gone downhill extremely fast after staying inside of the top ten for most of the 2016 season. However, two straight losses to Houston and Kentucky have Cardinals fans everywhere wondering what went wrong over the past couple of weeks.

Does this mean that Louisville has been overrated? Should the blame for this collapse be put on the coaching staff?

Well, the truth might be somewhere in the middle, but it’s clear that this team wasn’t ready for the spotlight.

The ugly truth is that this is a super talented football team with very little discipline. They finished this season in the bottom ten of all college football teams in almost every turnover and penalty statistic. Not to mention, their problems in these two areas have gotten worse every week since the loss to Clemson.

The offensive line has been terrible, the defense has been playing bad, and they frankly aren’t playing good football right now.

It’s extremely disappointing to watch, especially when most of us have defended their case for the College Football Playoff all year long.

Frankly, they don’t deserve to be in the Orange Bowl this season. You have to finish all 12 games with the same intensity and focus as the season-opener. It was apparent that the Cards wanted to talk more on twitter than they wanted to let their play talk on the football field.

With that being said, let’s not forget these are college students playing a game. What we need to hope for is that this season will mature and teach these guys for next year.

2017 could be a huge season if they can learn to finish and be more disciplined.

Bobby Petrino has this program on the rise and National Champions aren’t built overnight. However, losing to Kentucky and Houston, two weeks in-a-row, should never be a part of the plan.

This team still needs out support, no matter what bowl game they end up in.
