Louisville Football: Was Petrino wrong to comment about the committee?

We take a look at if Louisville football’s head coach was in the wrong commenting about the playoff committee on Saturday?

There is no disputing the fact that every Louisville football fan was bummed when the Cards dropped to number seven in the first College Football Playoff poll last Tuesday night. The Cardinals have beaten everyone on their schedule except for number two Clemson, but that apparently wasn’t good enough when compared to the six teams in front of them.

Louisville played on heck of a football game against Boston College today, which should help them going forward in terms of “style points”.

However, that probably wasn’t the most interesting thing you have heard all day. It was probably this quote by Bobby Petrino when asked about Louisville’s ranking.

Chip Patterson from CBS Sports had this quote from Bobby Petrino in his article on Saturday:

“Coach Bobby Petrino made a vague reference to style points and running up the score when asked about Louisville’s playoff ranking after the dominant win. Petrino, in a good mood following the easy win, was salty when joking that he could have changed the committee’s mind by leaving starters in the game against Florida State to win by 80 instead of the pedestrian final score of 63-20.

“Maybe I made a mistake. Maybe I should’ve left our starters out there against Florida State and scored 80,” Petrino said when asked about the CFP Rankings.”

So, was Bobby Petrino in the wrong commenting about the College Football Playoff committee?

For anyone that thinks he is whining or complaining, then you need to look somewhere else because heck no he isn’t in the wrong, he definitely should be mad. This team could very well end up 11-1 and the committee doesn’t see them as a top four football team.

He has the best player in the country, beat, at the time, the second ranked Seminoles, and are rolling through their schedule. Petrino can’t control how Houston plays, he can only control how his players perform.

At the same time, there is a point between two top-notch football programs, that you have to pull the starters. There are many reasons why, but none other than sportsmanship. That is what it comes down to 100 percent.

If Louisville would have put up 80 points on an already beaten down Florida State team, would that have really made a difference now that they are ranked 22nd?

Again, no Bobby Petrino was not in the wrong, he should be ticked off. Don’t be surprised when the Cards play with a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season.
