LSU Appears To Be Completely Out Of Tom Herman Sweepstakes

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

If you have read any of my work regarding the LSU coaching situation since the Tigers decided to move on from Les Miles, my feelings on Tom Herman have been pretty clear. If they decided to go with an outside candidate, he would be far-and-away my first choice for the job, and I think the two sides would be a perfect marriage.

Herman is a brilliant offensive mind and a fantastic recruiter, and he could do some real damage given the resources and recruiting base that LSU offers. But, unfortunately, it appears the Tigers may not be in the running for his services at all at this point.

It had been rumored that the Houston Cougars coach would strongly consider heading to Baton Rouge this offseason, but we knew the Tigers would have some very prestigious competition. It was reported early on that with Charlie Strong on the hot seat, Herman may also be the top guy for the Texas job if Strong is let go by the Longhorns.

Well, the fears of Texas stealing him away appear to be true, as Benjamin Allbright reported earlier today that he has “reliable sources” saying that Herman-to-Texas is “all but official.”

Technically, the Texas Longhorns still have a head coach, so Herman-to-LSU is not officially dead. But if the Tigers did indeed want Herman, it appears any hopes of that becoming a reality are over for good.

LSU interim head coach Ed Orgeron is doing a fantastic job so far, so the team may not even have a coaching search. But with Tom Herman reportedly off the market, this team better hope that Coach O keeps it rolling and wins the job, or the Tigers may end up settling for an underwhelming candidate this offseason.
