LSU heads to New York for the first time in a long, long time

This Saturday No. 8 LSU will travel to New York state to take on Syracuse, the Tigers' first trip to the Empire State in a long, long time.

How long? Try 73 years.

That’s right, the last time LSU visited New York was for a game against Fordham on Nov. 7, 1942 (which the Tigers won 26-13). Joe DiMaggio was patrolling center field for the Yankees, and the Dodgers were still playing in Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field.

In fact, this will be just the third time LSU has played in the state of New York in its school history.

Despite LSU and Syracuse’s rich football traditions, the teams have only met twice, with each team winning once. Both occasions were bowls game played at neutral sites.

And both the Tigers and the Orange will meet up Saturday in the Carrier Dome with perfect records.

No. 8 LSU (2-0, 0-0 SEC) blew by rival Auburn, 45-21 last weekend thanks to a 228-yard, three-touchdown performance by star running back Leonard Fournette, while Syracuse (3-0, 1-0 ACC) overcame an injury to quarterback Eric Dungey to edge Central Michigan, 30-27 in OT, for its first 3-0 start since 1991.

Dungey left in the first half after taking a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit and was replaced by both Austin Wilson and Zach Mahoney. It’s expected that Dungey will not be available for the LSU game and that Syracuse coach Scott Shafer will once again use a two-quarterback system.
