Maier leads UC Davis rally over Idaho St. 44-37 in OT
DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — Jake Maier threw for 382 yards and a career-high five touchdowns and led UC Davis to a comeback win against Idaho State, 44-37 in overtime Saturday night.
UC Davis now has sole possession of first place atop the Big Sky Conference after Weber State's 14-6 win earlier against Eastern Washington. The Aggies (5-1, 3-0) trailed 30-14 early in the third before mounting their rally.
Maier threw a 45-yard score to Justin Kraft with 3:37 left in the third to make it 30-22 with the 2-point conversion. Idaho State (4-2, 3-1) added to its lead when Tanner Gueller threw a 3-yard TD to Michael Dean for a 15-point lead. Maier responded with a 7-yard scoring pass to Ulonzo Gilliam with 8:30 left, then, with 69 seconds left, found Keelan Doss for a 5-yard score. The 2-point conversion tied it at 37.
Gueller marched the Bengals to UC Davis' 10-yard line in 64 seconds, but Campbell Sheidow missed a 27-yard field goal as time expired. Gilliam ran for a 4-yard touchdown in overtime, and Idaho State failed to convert on fourth-and-3 when Vincent White broke up Tanner Gueller's pass intended for Mitch Gueller.
