Maine trips Rhode Island 38-36 on Doak's last-play FG
KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — Kenny Doak kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired to lift Maine to a wild 38-36 win over Rhode Island on Saturday, the Black Bears' 12th straight in the 97-game series that dates to 1911.
The Black Bears (4-2, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association) went 54 yards in nine plays after getting the ball on their 25 with 51 seconds to play. Chris Ferguson, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, was 5 of 7 for 55 yards.
Ferguson's 9-yard run put Maine on top 45-30 with 2:28 to play. The Rams (3-2, 2-1) marched back, helped by two roughing the passer penalties, a pass interference and a holding penalty — two coming on fourth down, to take the lead on a 2-yard pass from Vito Priore to Aaron Parker. However, Priore's conversion pass was incomplete.
Maine had 406 yards, forced three turnovers and had four sacks — pushing its league-leading total to 26 — but also had 16 penalties for 197 yards. Ferguson was 30 of 48 for 278 yards with Micah Wright making 10 catches for 125 yards.
Priore threw for 246 yards with Parker catching nine balls for 124 yards and two scores.
