Marshawn Williams has made up his mind about his collegiate career.

After three major knee injuries in his career at Virginia Tech, Marshawn Williams announced via Twitter that he was thankful and grateful for the Hokies’ and their fans.

“Thank you to the Hokie Nation for all the love, this is the best place to be and the best fans in the nation hands down.”

Virginia Tech made the announcement that Williams will take a medical disqualification due to persistent knee problems, meaning he’ll no longer play football but remain in school and on scholarship.

Here is the statement from the Hokies and Williams:

“I’d like to thank coach Frank Beamer, coach Justin Fuente and their staffs for giving me the chance to live out my dream of playing college football at Virginia Tech. I’m also very appreciative of all my teammates for the chance to compete with them, as well as our trainers, medical and strength staff for helping me through the many ups and downs of this journey. While I’m disappointed that I can no longer sweat with my teammates on the football field, I’ll be a Hokie for the rest of my life.”

Williams was limited to only 18 games in his career but also wants the fans to know he is not leaving Virginia Tech as he plans to stay on campus to finish his degree. This announcement comes as no surprise, but everyone that is a fan of the Hokies considers this a bitter-sweet moment, including Fuente.

“It’s come as no surprise that Marshawn has remained upbeat and positive despite suffering another injury that led to this difficult decision. He [Marshawn] has fought a good fight for himself and the Hokies, and we’re glad that he’ll continue his education at Virginia Tech even though this latest injury will prevent him from continuing his football career,” Fuente said in the press release.

The depth chart for 2017 at running back is now slim with the departure of Williams and Shai McKenzie announcing he is transferring from the program. The running backs that were on the roster last season include, redshirt-sophomores Coleman Fox and Deshawn McClease along with redshirt-junior DJ Reid and junior Travon McMillian.

It’s a wide open position with a couple of question marks but by the Hokies adding Jalen Holston, it should make for a fun and entertaining spring workout.
