Maryland coach D.J. Durkin's rebuilding effort got a nice shot in the arm Friday with the announcement William Likely will be a Terrapin in 2016.

Likely, an All-American return man and the 2015 Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, could have skipped his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

“I’m excited to announce that I will be returning to Maryland for my senior season,” said Likely in a news release. “First and foremost, I’m looking forward to earning my degree. Secondly, I want to finish off what I started with my teammates. We believe in the direction of this program and know that the future is bright.”

Likely returned two punts and one kickoff for a touchdown last season, when he was also named to the All-Big Ten first team as a defensive back for the second time.

The Belle Glade, Fla., native force three fumbles and had 44 tackles in 2015.

Durkin was hired as the new head coach of the Terrapins in December, the same month defensive linemen Yannick Ngakoue and Quinton Jefferson announced they would leave school early to enter the draft.
