Maryland Football: Lawtez Rogers commits to Maryland
Lawtez Rogers made losing out on star recruit Joshua Kaindoh a little less devastating.
On Thursday evening, the star Eleanor Roosevelt (Md.) defensive end committed to Maryland in a pledge that was expected for quite some time.
Rogers had an offer from Wake Forest in addition to interest from Rutgers, Temple, and Virginia Tech. According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, he is rated as the No. 76 defensive and the No. 26 player in the state of Maryland.
Defensive line coach Mike London was responsible for getting Rogers to College Park. In the 2017 class, London has gotten pledges from Hampton (Va.) athlete Dazz Newsome and St. Frances Academy (Md.) defensive end B’Ahmad Miller.
Coach D.J. Durkin and his staff definitely were in need of some help on the defensive line. In addition to losing out on Kaindoh, Miller was the only other defensive end in the 2017 class.
It’s also worth noting that Roman Braglio graduates this spring and Jesse Aniebonam only has one more season of eligibility. Durkin certainly needed to replenish the position and Roger was a huge part of that.
The Terps also have a pledge from St. John’s College (D.C.) defensive tackle Cam Spence. Spence did visit Penn State with Kaindoh last weekend, but tweeted that he’s “still holding on strong.”
There’s still two months until National Signing Day, so the possibility of adding more defensive linemen to the class is definitely there. When up against it last offseason, Durkin was able to put together a solid class despite only being in College Park for two months.
Rogers is certainly a great start as the Terps have to move on from Kaindoh.
